Jason Villalba Launches Campaign for Mayor of Dallas

January 15, 2019

Local Businessman and Former Texas State Representative Outlines Community-Centered, Bipartisan, Innovative Campaign to Move Dallas Forward

Dallas, TX – Local businessman and former Texas State Representative Jason Villalba, today, launched his campaign to be the next Mayor of Dallas at a press conference at the home of his home of his grandmother, Celia Villalba, in Oak Cliff. At the announcement, Villalba outlined his innovative plans to successfully move Dallas forward and how the power of community needs to be harnessed to ensure that all citizens can take part in Dallas’ success and future. Jason was joined by his parents, George III and Naomi, his wife Brooke, his three children, and close friend, Democratic State Representative Poncho Nevarez.

“After much prayer, introspection, and discussion with Brooke and my children, I am announcing my candidacy to be the next Mayor of the great city of Dallas,” said Jason Villalba. “I believe that Dallas’ brightest days are ahead of us, not behind us, but we must do more for those in our community who have not been able to fully participate in Dallas’ tremendous success.

“A community divided by race and income disparity cannot fulfill the greatest potential of its residents. Dallas is already great, but with new and dynamic leadership, and through the power of community, Dallas can be transcendent. Just like that beautiful Calatrava arch that traverses the Trinity, Dallas’ future leaders must be a unifying force for Dallas.”

Villalba, a fourth-generation Texan, was born in Dallas and has lived in Dallas most of his life. The first in his family to go to college, he attended Baylor University on scholarship and went on to graduate from the University of Texas School of Law. He currently practices law at the firm Foley Gardere.

Elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2013, Villalba quickly established a reputation for a tremendous work ethic and for a willingness to work across the aisle. As a result, during his time in office, more of the bills he authored were passed than the rest of his legislative class, and he earned awards of distinction from the Dallas Police Association, Dallas Fire and Rescue, the Texas Association of Realtors, the ASPCA, MADD, the Texas Medical Association, the Cancer Action Network, and many other organizations.

Representative Poncho Nevarez (D-Eagle Pass), Freshman of the Year for the Democratic Caucus in 2013 and a member of the prestigious Sunset Committee, attended the press conference and publicly endorsed his friend and former colleague.

“I couldn’t be more proud to endorse my friend and dedicated public servant Jason Villalba in his campaign to be the next Mayor of Dallas,” said Representative Poncho Nevarez. “Just like the state of Texas, Dallas’ future will be brighter than its past if its leaders are willing to work across the aisle and put progress over partisanship. During our time serving in the Texas legislature together, I witnessed firsthand Jason’s commitment to bipartisanship and compromise and the incredible results it allowed us to achieve.

“Across this state, we look at cities like Dallas to lead. Dallas needs a leader committed to common sense, and committed to ideas, not parties. That’s Jason. He’s going to get it done for Dallas.”

During the press conference, Villalba outlined five policy proposals to move Dallas and all its residents successfully into the future. These included capping property taxes for seniors, rebuilding and proactively fortifying Dallas’ infrastructure, recommitting to and protecting public safety officers’ pay and pension system, fully funding and expanding Mayor Rawlings’ Grow South Initiative, and actively pursuing major economic and community projects including new professional sports franchises.

Villalba is a dedicated husband, father, and active member of the Dallas community. He has served as a past board member of the Dallas Children’s Trust, the Dallas Housing Finance Corporation, the Dallas County Citizens Election Advisory Committee, and is a current board member of the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Holocaust Museum and Center for Education and Tolerance and Uplift Education.

“From the moment I take the oath of office until my last day in office, I will have a singular mission – ensure that Dallas is the best place in the country to raise a family, find high-wage, rewarding employment for our residents, and build a dynamic and rewarding future for the next generation,” said Villalba.

“I was born here, I raise and send my kids to public school here, I work hard to pay the mortgage here and I have relatives that struggle to pay ever-rising property taxes here. I am here for you because I am you. Together, through the power of our communities, we can do amazing things for the city we love.  I ask you to join me today on this journey to be your next Mayor of Dallas.”
